Evaluating the QB by his relationship with the TE position
The greatest TE QB of all time just so happens to be the greatest QB of all time. Among the countless accolades he amassed during his mythical career, I would like to add another career record which DWARFS his competitors. Tom Brady has 100 career touchdown passes to the Tight End position, second in that stat is Rivers with 42.
Last year when analysts marveled at the short timing excellence of Tua, I got nervous. You see, it is all gravy when you can go through two reads and release before the timing gap expires, but once it expires the QB is forced to buy time. Buy time with pocket presence, buy time with athleticism, buy time with poise. The complete TE lives his pass catching career during this window of time.
I feel it is important to qualify “a complete TE” so lets use metrics. Qualifications
Must be Good or above at both blocking and passing. PFF grades above 60 in both. A TE that can’t block is a slow WR, and a TE that can’t pass-catch is a small offensive lineman. Lastly, more than 40% of his total offensive snaps must be in a blocking roll (The player must make contact with a box defender).
Try to imagine a 3 read passing play. Most QB’s won’t get to there third read before the clock expires. If your 3rd read is a WR he isn’t fooling anyone and suddenly the play becomes a fire drill. However, if the QB can buy himself the time for the TE to engage and slip his block, the complete TE will usually find himself in open space.
For a QB to leverage the advantages of a complete TE he must have the patience, the instinct, the poise to wait for the TE to leverage the defense by first engaging in an effective block.
Case in point, Tua has been a horrible TE QB, and if you are inclined to point out Gesiki, he never met my qualifications for a complete TE. He is a long, tall athlete with a great vertical and good hands (A slow receiver) Gesiki never even broke the 40% blocking rule. For comparison Gronk was basically at 50% blocking by snap count his whole career and he is the record holder for TD receptions for a TE.
