The System QB, a dismissive label created by lazy assumptions.

Bill Parcel famously said “Organizations build QB’s” I realize how self promoting that perspective may appear from a famously bloviating coach, However it is important to note that the highest QB rating in a Super Bowl was registered under Parcels leadership by the poster boy of the “System QB” Phil Simms. In the storied history of the NFL, if you really dig deep to unpack QB success, the prolific winners where mostly System QB’s. Dan Marino, Dan Fouts, Warren Moon, Michael Vick, Lamar Jackson, Cam Newton, Andrew Luck, and many more; Elite QB talents that never even came close to a title. While physically inferior physical prospects excelled. Joe Montana, Nick Foles, Drew Brees,  Tom Brady, Phil Simms, Shit even Steve Young who was an after thought in Tampa Bay before joining the 49ers. The cognitive bias of many fans and pundits is to be in awe of the physical phenom and yet ignore the undisputed history of the position. John Elway for example, an elite QB prospect lost 3 super bo...

The Genius of Mike McDaniels; he leverages any adjustment to his attack to keep defenses off balance. Let’s Diagnose.

In the above illustration, The Pats are playing a safety high on the boundary side (the short side of the field) and a safety with a 10 yard cushion on the field side. At this point of the game the Pats have been bludgeoned by wide zone runs, and precision passing towards the flats (routes that stretch the defense horizontally within 10 yards from the line of scrimmage). Notice how their best front four defender Judon is aligned far left from the left tackle, in an obvious attempt to seal the edge and not allow a wide zone run to the field side. Furthermore, the two inside Linebackers seem to be aligned to protect against the wide zone run towards the boundary side, because Magic Mike has been countering the weighted alignment all game by challenging the boundary side. The first TD run was a wide zone run towards the boundary.  As the ball is snapped, #30 for Miami, who was lined up as the wideout on the field side is in full sprint in motion towards the boundary, and #81 im...

Tua vs Herbert - how do we compare them with empirical evidence?

Health shouldn’t be ignored. The narrative of Tua’s health is nauseating, yet relevant when evaluating the overall quality of a player. Talent isn’t only a measure of field production, it also encompasses the talent of availability. It cannot be argued that Herbert’s physical talent allows him to benefit from the luxury of availability and that is a talent that is far to often dismissed despite being incredibly important. Winning % A large contingent of football pundits will in one breath bloviate over the influence of the QB in a victory, while in the same breath excuse away a QB loss to a myriad of extenuating circumstances. I am of the opinion that Win/Loss metrics in the modern NFL is undisputedly a QB measurable.  Herbert win% = .500 Tua win% = .590 Aggressive attempts One of the lazy narratives that exhibits the overt ignorance of perspective is to equate arm strength with aggressive passing. In 2022 Tua was first in  CAY/Cmp ▼  --  Completed air yards p...
