The BINARY propaganda of the fundamentally non-binary reality that is race. Barrack Obama and the Jaquez siblings.
With the 18th pick in the NBA draft....
The Miami Heat selected with their first round pick the "Mexican American" Jaime Jaquez Jr. a forward from UCLA. Jaime also has a sister who plays for UCLA and the two siblings made history as the only two siblings to make the sweet sixteen in the same year as brother and sister and every published narrative is quick to classify them as 'Mexican American".
Parents: Jaime Jaquez Sr. and Angela Sather (Jaquez)
It is technically true that the Jaquez siblings can be classified as "Mexican American" however it is also true how myopic and manipulative the label implies. If you where to do a superficial search on the origin of these two accomplished sibling athletes you would easily stumble upon the overt publicity of the Mexican nationality of their father. However, the nationality of their mother requires motivation to unearth her origin. Angela Sather's family lineage remains a mystery, but Sather is a Nordic name, Angela is a tall white women with blue eyes, but what really stood out for me as an obvious attempt to completely ignore her influence in the racial genetic narrative is that she is a Basketball Hall of Famer at her alma mater. Why is the athletic accomplishment of their talented mother who obviously is a major genetic influence to the success of her children buried under the narrative of Mexican heritage?
Barrack Obama's White Guardians.
"The first African American US President" was raised by his white family. Ann Dunham (Mother) Stanley Dunham (Grandfather) and Madelyn Dunham (Grandmother) where the only parental figures in Obamas life and they are solely responsible for raising the 44th president. Obamas mother (Ann Dunham) was a white women from Kansas. Stanley Dunham Obamas Grandfather who raised him from the age of 10 was a white WWII Vet, Madelyn Dunham Obamas Grandmother was a white women and accomplished banker, Obamas most influential parental figure (according to Obama). None of these facts are disputed, and yet Obama is still referred to as the first African American president. I realize that technically it may be true, but Obama's Mother was a white women, he was raised by the cooperation of a white family, and his black father was tragically absentee.
The Technicolor of race
It is important to stipulate that my perspective is not a reflection on Mexican Americans or a political editorial targeting Obama. I realize how seductive it is to be intellectually lazy and assume that my examples are just camouflaged targets of race or politics. Nothing is further from the truth, I voted for Obama first term and I don't regret it, and I celebrate diversity as a Cuban American. Nevertheless, I am disturbed by how the infinite variable of someones heritage can be so manipulated to conform to a transparent narrative that promotes a damaging polar perception of the Technicolor that is race.
