The Tea Leaves of the Team Stats Box Score: Super Bowl LVII

The general consensus regarding Super Bowl LVII is to point out that Jalen Hurts was Magnificent! A miopic media showering praise of his 3 rushing TD’s, his 300+ passing yards, his completion %, Although it would be spiteful to say he wasn’t great, I think that the opportunity Hurts had to accumulate those gaudy statistics is precisely why the Eagles lost, despite clearly being the more complete team.

Interpreting the Team Stat boxscore.

Total 1st downs - adv Eagles
3rd down efficiency - adv Eagles
4th down efficiency - adv Eagles
Total offensive plays - adv Eagles
Total yards - adv Eagles
Total drives - adv Eagles
Passing yards - adv Eagles
Rushing attempts - adv Eagles
Possession - adv Eagles

Just pointing out the team game advantages should  confound us to accept an Eagles lost. Yet, they did lose, how? why? LET US READ THE TEA LEAVES.

First, let us point out the obvious.

The Eagles lost the turnover battle 1-0, which is the most important statistical battle of all in determining victory in the sport of football. To add insult to injury, the turnover resulted in a defensive score.
It is easy to blame Hurts for the error, and obviously he is the only player responsible for the physical error. However, much of the narrative of Hurts great game can be quantified by his usage rate, one can easily point out that his usage rate influenced his game defining turnover.

Eagles positioned Hurts to be productive and also fail.

Team stat box score
Yards per play - adv Chiefs
Rushing yards - adv Chiefs
Yards per rush - adv Chiefs

How does a historically dominant rushing team (The Eagles broke the single season rushing td record) have more carries and have less rushing yards? Eagles had 32 rushing attempts to KC’s 25 and loss by 43 yards. They loss because Hurts had almost half of the whole teams rushing attempts with 15. 15 attempts for 70 yards at an avg of 4.7yards. The top 3 KC rushing attempt leaders in that game all had a higher avg. INCLUDING Mahomes - 6 attempts for 44 yards, 7.3 avg. Which interesting enough is the highest rushing avg among all players.

The Eagles relied way to heavily on Hurts, and his prolific stats shouldn’t be a surprise for a physically gifted athlete, but the Eagles lost because they unnecessarily leaned too heavily on a young player. His statistical tally is less a product of his ability and more a result of a foolish game plan that deviated from the Eagles most compelling advantage, a COMPLETE TEAM!
