The Tea Leaves of the Team Stats Box Score: Super Bowl LVII

Image
The general consensus regarding Super Bowl LVII is to point out that Jalen Hurts was Magnificent! A miopic media showering praise of his 3 rushing TD’s, his 300+ passing yards, his completion %, Although it would be spiteful to say he wasn’t great, I think that the opportunity Hurts had to accumulate those gaudy statistics is precisely why the Eagles lost, despite clearly being the more complete team.  Interpreting the Team Stat boxscore . Total 1st downs - adv Eagles 3rd down efficiency - adv Eagles 4th down efficiency - adv Eagles Total offensive plays - adv Eagles Total yards - adv Eagles Total drives - adv Eagles Passing yards - adv Eagles Rushing attempts - adv Eagles Possession - adv Eagles Just pointing out the team game advantages should  confound us to accept an Eagles lost. Yet, they did lose, how? why? LET US READ THE TEA LEAVES. First, let us point out the obvious. The Eagles lost the turnover battle 1-0, which is the most important statistical battle of all in det...

The Hammer

The Hammer, the importance of size in football. When I was young, I was a defensive player. At 65 lbs I was a DT, believe or not. At 100lbs I was a LB, at 160 I became a corner. I realize that my observations are limited to youth and high school football, but I played defense for every snap of organized football. I feel it is important to point out to illustrate my point, the influence of the HAMMER! As a 65 lbs 9 year old DT I was pretty formidable, I was big for my age but also still fast. I was a starting DT and was measured the third fastest on the team. I even dislocated a kids shoulder, I am not trying to brag, I am trying to illuminate the situation. In our first scrimmage we played, our opponents offense had an incredible elusive black kid. Extremely talented and balanced for our age, I chased him with focused intent all game, that little elusive fuck!!, but the more he slipped the more I focused. His talent didn't discourage me it only drove me towards more effort. I ended...

THE GREAT #54. A first ballot HOF career, dismissed by a media that never played in the trenches to fully appreciate an ability unmatched by any defender in NFL history.

In my opinion, there are two NFL players drafted by the Hall of Famer Jimmy Johnson that most represent the physical manifestation of Jimmy Johnsons philosophy of play conviction and the power of the immediacy of decisions. Emmitt Smith and #54 Zach Thomas. Jimmy Johnsons core football philosophy was speed, not physical speed, but the velocity of a player to diagnose and react with conviction. Furthermore, the immediacy to demonstrate this skill early in his career. PLAY FAST, SHOW EARLY. Zach was drafted in the 5th round, joining a team that had invested heavily in a MLB in free agency, Jack Del Rio. The 1996 training camp started  July 15th, after two weeks Jimmy cut Jack Del Rio on August 5th, and Zach became the Dolphins starting MLB for his whole career as a Dolphin. A true manifestation of Jimmy's philosophy of immediate demonstration of excellence. One can easily argue that #54 rookie season was his greatest. Zach was instantaneously one of the most prolific LB's in the...
