Racism is an intellectually lazy and harmful interpretation of the lack of Black NFL Head Coaches

Historically, sports is the vehicle that navigates a society away from discrimination. Jesse Owens was one of the greatest athletes in HISTORY, a black man who suffered through Jim Crow and then immortalized by the whole nation when he embarrassed the master race in Berlin. Jackie Robinson was a war hero and broke the color barrier in baseball with his effervescent talent and poise. Muhammad Ali went to prison because he was steadfast in his observation of his beliefs, and although he was punished, he also became an iconic legend revered by his countryman.

The dominance of the black athlete in our nation can not be debated. That dominance in athletic competition bridged the racial divide and highlighted the importance of simply judging performance and outcome. Black Athletes in both Basketball and Football, arguably the most physically challenging in North American sports, Are by a wide margin the majority. 57.5% in the NFL, 74.2% in the NBA. For perspective, The percentage of Black citizens in this country is only 14.2%, that is a staggering dominance of physical superiority over all other identity groups. So the idea that racism is dictating a coaching decision is demographically ridiculous!

In football you are always evolving, while these superior black athletes where earning there playing time, less athletic individual studied the game. While OJ was breaking rushing records, the athletically challenged Belichick was riding pine in Connecticut and dissecting the playbook as appose to gracing the field. While elite athletes focused on arena immortality, the grand majority of the demographic sharpened a more universal understanding of the sport they love. Even more simplistic, while the athletes played, the mortals game planned. .

The Case of Flores (Ignoring the pay for loss accusation.)

The suggestion that he was discriminated because of his race is ridiculous! I thought Flores was a brilliant defensive mind but his grasp of offense was inadequate to say the least. He was incapable of retaining an OC or Oline coach, he failed in developing a QB, he mismanaged his Oline, and his last offense was 5th worst in franchise history in scoring. If he sensed discrimination in job interviews, it was bigotry of his offense not his skin color.

Consider, in the history of both the NBA and the NFL only 5 men where both HOF players, and HOF coaches (John Wooden, Lenny Wilkins, Bill Sherman, Tom Heinsohn, and Bill Russell; note all Basketball, and no example in football, HOWEVER!! In Football, The greatest GM I have ever studied is a HOF player and will be a first ballot HOFer as an executive, OZZIE NEWSOME. So out of the six in that exclusive club, 3 are black american men. Which suggest that even great white athletes are statistically not successful coaches,

The NFL is a result oriented business, with flaws and predefined assumptions that parallel humanity, but the driving force of all decisions is success and it’s many variables, NOT RACE!. Brian Flores was hired for his talents, and discriminated for his inadequate offensive approach.
